Guests at an indoor craft workshop at Luma Numa in Canggu, Bali on a rainy day

Our guests at Luma Numa often ask us what they can do when its raining, because the beach is out of question. The article covers rainy day activities in Bali that we know from our own neighbourhood, plus a few ideas for days when you want to leave Canggu. For dry days, our guide to things to do in Canggu has more inspiration.

Bali's Rainy Season at a Glance

The wet months run from November to March, brought by the northwest monsoon. December to February is the peak, with 280 to 350 mm of rainfall per month in Denpasar, according to Climates to Travel. During this period the island turns a deep green, rice fields fill with water and the air feels heavier than in the dry season.

Rain tends to arrive in heavy bursts, often later in the day, with drier spells in between. Some days stay overcast for longer, and January brings the most rain of the year.

For visitors, this rhythm has one practical consequence: plan outdoor time early and keep the afternoons for something under a roof.

Indoor Activities in Canggu When It Rains

1. Make Your Own Hat, Mirror or Sandals at Luma Numa

Our studio is where many guests end up on wet afternoons. You choose a piece, sit at one of our tables and spend one to two hours shaping it with charms, shells, pearls or macramé knots. Everything you need is provided, no previous experience is required and you carry the finished item home that same day.

Current workshops include the Charm Hat (IDR 399K), Scarf (IDR 399K), Macramé Sandals & Charms (IDR 499K), Pearl & Shell Mirror (IDR 450K), Boho Bag (IDR 650K) and Shell & Pearl Bamboo Brush (IDR 299K). Our studio is open from 9am until 5pm. Groups of up to 16 people fit in, and dogs are welcome too. You can compare everything on our workshops page.

2. Cook Balinese Dishes

Several kitchens around Canggu teach local recipes such as sambal, satay and fragrant rice dishes. Classes usually include a market tour or an introduction to spices, then you eat what you prepared. It is a filling way to spend a stormy lunchtime.

3. Book a Massage or Spa Treatment

Balinese massage, reflexology, facials and flower baths are offered on almost every main road. Two hours on a treatment bed while the rain drums on the roof is one of the most popular ways locals and visitors pass a wet afternoon. Booking ahead helps, because spas fill up fast once the clouds arrive.

4. Stretch at a Yoga or Pilates Studio

Canggu has a large number of studios offering yoga, reformer Pilates, breathwork and sound healing. Most accept walk-ins or single bookings, which suits short stays. An evening class is a calm way to end a day spent indoors.

5. Craft Silver Jewellery

Silversmiths in the area run classes where you design a ring, pendant or pair of earrings and work the metal yourself. Expect around three hours at the bench. If you enjoy hands-on work, this pairs well with a morning session at our studio.

6. Throw Clay or Paint a Canvas

Pottery wheels and painting easels are another option when the weather turns. Some studios fire your ceramic piece and let you collect it a few days later, so check the timing if you are leaving soon.

7. Blend a Personal Perfume

Perfume workshops in and around Canggu guide you through base, heart and top notes until you have a scent of your own in a small bottle. It takes about an hour or two and makes a light, packable souvenir.

8. Settle Into a Coworking Space

For digital nomads, a downpour is a good excuse to get deep work done. Coworking spaces in Canggu offer stable internet, air conditioning, meeting rooms and day passes. Many also host evening talks or social events where you meet other people working remotely.

9. Linger Over a Long Café Lunch

Canggu's cafés range from Indonesian warungs to specialty coffee roasters. On wet days we like to choose one with a sheltered terrace, order a second coffee and watch the street turn into a stream.

10. Treat Yourself at a Salon

Hair salons, nail studios and lash bars are busy all year in Canggu, and a rainy afternoon is the perfect moment for an appointment. Reserve early, since many travellers have the same idea.

Rainy Day Activities Elsewhere in Bali

If you have a driver for the day, a few other areas offer plenty to do under cover.

Ubud is home to several art museums, including the Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA), Museum Puri Lukisan and the Neka Art Museum. The town also has many cooking schools and craft studios.

Celuk village, on the way to Ubud, has a long tradition of silver and gold work. Workshops there let you watch artisans or take a class yourself.

Seminyak and Kuta have shopping centres such as Beachwalk in Kuta and Seminyak Village, along with large day spas. They are a practical choice when the whole family needs a dry afternoon.

Travel times grow during heavy rain, so leave earlier than your map app suggests.

A Rainy Day Plan for Canggu

This is the schedule we suggest to guests when a wet afternoon is forecast:

  • 7:30 Beach walk or surf at Batu Bolong while the sky is clear
  • 9:30 Breakfast, then a few focused hours at a coworking space
  • 12:30 Lunch at a café with sheltered seating
  • 14:00 Workshop at Luma Numa
  • 16:00 Massage or spa treatment nearby
  • 18:30 Dinner close to where you are staying, so the drive home stays short

Tips for Bali's Rainy Season

  • Pack a light rain jacket and quick drying clothes. Flip flops or sandals cope better with puddles than sneakers.
  • Use a car through Grab or Gojek during a downpour. Riding a scooter in heavy rain is hard work, and some lanes in Canggu flood quickly.
  • Keep electronics in a dry bag when you move between places, especially laptops.
  • Plan outdoor trips for the morning. Waterfalls, volcano hikes and rice terrace walks are easier and less slippery before the afternoon showers. After strong rain, check conditions before visiting waterfalls.
  • Bring mosquito repellent. Mosquitoes are more active in the wet months.
  • Reserve indoor activities early on days with a poor forecast, because spas, classes and workshops fill up.
  • Keep your itinerary flexible and swap beach and indoor days as the weather changes.
